Saving Lives Starts Here: FICCS Champions Cardiac Emergency Training through Africa STEMI

The Foundation for International Cardiac and Community Services (FICCS) recently led a high-impact series of training sessions under the Africa STEMI initiative, bringing together healthcare professionals to strengthen their capacity in handling time-sensitive cardiac emergencies.

The program focused on enhancing clinical readiness in managing acute cardiac conditions, with an emphasis on ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI), a leading cause of preventable mortality in Africa. Participants engaged in intensive courses that combined expert-led instruction with practical, scenario-based learning tailored to local healthcare contexts.

Topics covered included acute cardiac emergency response, vascular access techniques, and the integration of medical devices and wearables in managing heart failure. These sessions equipped healthcare providers with the tools and confidence to act decisively in critical moments, skills that can significantly improve patient outcomes in high-stakes situations.

The training culminated in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) assessment and certification, hosted at Aga Khan University Hospital. This internationally recognized certification ensured that participants not only met global standards but were also well-prepared to apply their knowledge in the communities they serve.

“Africa STEMI is more than a conference, it’s a mission to reduce preventable deaths through hands-on, lifesaving education,” said a FICCS team lead.

Through initiatives like Africa STEMI, FICCS continues to deliver on its mission: strengthening healthcare systems across Africa through training, mentorship, and global collaboration. Each session is a step toward safer hospitals, faster response times, and ultimately, more lives saved.
